Instead of making another wedge and fighting it the whole time, I decided to grind the nose of the rivet puller like is suggested as an alternative to the wedge in the manual. Here is the puller after surgery:
This allows it to fit closer to the flange of the brackets and sit vertically when on the rivet.
It was a quick night but I got all the brackets sealed and attached!
